Did you try to adjust the number of tiles? The more tiles, the
"flatter" the image will look (more uniform in intensity), and the
fewer tiles you use the more it will look like your original. I have
no idea what "the extension of the bright (or dark) spots is too
large" means.

Yes, I tried with all parameters, for different numbers of tiles... These spots can vary in size. Sometimes these spots are just a small area in the upper corner, or it can be almost half of the image, it seems like the image is over saturated...

There are a lot of different filters that you could use and a lot of
different looks that you could want to achieve. Why don't you post
your image to your favorite image hosting web site (such as http://drop.io)
along with a mocked-up version (like you fixed it up in Photoshop) and
we can see what the proper method to achieve that might be.
