IA, I think you misinterpret Alaa's response; I think he was saying that
he does see that the internal representation is full dp and it was only
format that controlled the limited precision he viewed and "that's what
he wanted [sic]"

Obviously, if my interpretation is wrong instead he can enlighten us
(assuming he returns, of course)...

Yes I didn't notice the ambiguity at first but now I do. Thanks for
pointing it out. I thought that

"The format function affects only how numbers are displayed, not how
MATLAB computes or saves them, and thats what i want. "

could be translated as
"The format function changes the display but what I REALLY want to
know is how to increase the precision in how MATLAB computes or saves
them."

but the other alternative translation as you suggest is
"The format function controls the display of the precision, and that
is what I needed to know."

Your all right Mr. dpb, Mr. ImageAnalyst, thank you for your support.
The sentence "The format function affects only how numbers are displayed, not how
MATLAB computes or saves them, and thats what i want. " was as it showed a little ambiguous.
I meant "The format function controls the display of the precision, and that
is what I needed to know."
Thank you all for your care, thank you Mr. dpb for your explanation.
