Hi folks,

Having perused these forums and seen that Outlook should be uninstalled
first, I did so and Office 2000 as well for what I thought would give clear
ground for a clean install of Office 2007

I downloaded, the installation began, an an error message said that Outlook
2006 must be installed before Business Manager could be installed, and to
install Outlook 2007 from Disk 1 first. "Disk 1" on a download???

This doesn't augeur well for my confidence in Office 2007. This program has
been out for years and Microsoft is so apathetic as to leave disk install
messages on a download version? OK....seeing I have no disc, I find the
install files that have downloaded into /desktop/downloads/msoffice. These
are: X13-11296.EXE & X16-69453. That's where I'm up to. Which of these files
should I execute first? In fact, should both be exercised or are they (say)
32 bit and 64 bit versions? I don't know and I don't want any more problems
with Windows 7 than I've already had, having bought 2 identical quad core
machines each with Win 7 loaded and allowed "Easy Transfer" to scramble the
first for me. I'm now on the second and Office 2000 appears to have some
issues with Windows 7, causing print and other various problems.

I had determined to see how Office 2007 performs under Win 7 before deciding
whether to strip both machines and install XP on both.

I note that there are good comments on the Office 2010 beta version
stability. Any comments/advice comparing 7 Pro & 10 Pro beta would be
appreciated. Perhaps I should skip 2007 trial version and go 10 instead?

Cheers,
Kevryl

Kevryl,

As a software developer, I frequent the Lindersoft SetupBuilder forum, and
Friedrich Linder (an expert in installs - owner of Lindersoft) has stated a
number of times:

"It's coming from an incomplete download or bad upload"

So, if you haven't already - re-download and try again. If it was a bad
upload by Microsoft, many would have complained and it would be replaced.

From recollection X13....... is disk 1 and X16..... is disk 2, Business
Contact Manager (Unless you intend using BCM don't bother installing it)

You should not use Easy Transfer for Office, it will corrupt any Outlook
Profile
There is no 64bit version of Office.
Office 2k is not fully compatible with Vista, let alone Win 7, and if you
are going to install Office 2007, should not in any case be installed.
As I understand it, if you purchase Office 2007 you will qualify for Office
2010 when it ships

I'm running Win 7, quad core, 64 bit and have had no issues with Office
2007, but then I didn't use any wizards to transfer settings or data, or
install any incompatible early version software.

Office Pro Trial IIRC is actually two downloads. One is Business Contact
Manager and the other is all the other programs in Office. With the
install files you have, from the numbers, I don't know which is to be
installed first but if you get the error message with one installation file,
use the other. Once it is installed run the other if you actually need
Business Contact Manager.

Office 2007 is only available in 32 bit versions. Office 2010 will be
available in 32 and 64 bit versions but the beta is generally only available
in 32 bit.

I have been running 2010 Beta now on both XP and Vista machines (don't have
my Win 7 set up yet), and while not putting them through all their paces, I
have found 2010 to be a stable product with minor issues. Microsoft
recommends NOT to use these programs in any production environment but only
to test them in a non-critical environment.
