The price difference is negligble. In fact, at some places seeing a
DVDROM drive for sale is a rarety.

I'm not so concerned with burning but when I buy software it requires a DVD
to install. I haven't yet bought a program on a flash drive.

For myself it's a no brainer. I use a camcorder and want to make movies to
share with others. I want a backup of my software programs or DVD movies in
case the orginal gets unusable or lost. I download public domain movies and
want to burn them to DVD for viewing on a laptop. I download an ISO of the
newest Linux Ubuntu to try on a spare computer. I'd say it's still a ways
off before the burner burns out its welcome.

Yes, it is. Throwback to floppies, a RW or Write only, either way
takes a little more preparation. If you build with any amount of
software, USB flashdrives are still too new for that aspect. About to
the point where it would be hard to find a MB without an optical
provision to boot in the BIOS, anyway.
