Unsure what this has to do with freeware, but Giles Corey was the
tough old bird who was literally pressed to death rather than enter a
plea. This allowed his children to inherit. His last words were:"More
weight!".
The American witchcraft trials were an an aberration chronologically,
but far from unique. Witches were horribly tortured & then executed in
Europe, esp. Germany, for over a century. Tens of thousands died,
usually by being burned. Germany was where most of the worst
atrocities were committed. England was much milder, requiring a trial,
& not allowing torture. King James (of the Bible fame) was a fan of
watching the torturing of accused witches, & was disappointed when he
move from Scotland south & it was illegal. He got some fun with Guy
Fawkes, though, & went to Holland once to pursue his interest.

I read an interesting research paper, which showed a a strong
correlation between witch trials and seasonal wetness (both Europe and
America). Seems that the rye grain would go moldy in storage during
the wet seasons, so the rye bread of the following season would have a
good enough dose of LSD to induce demonic possessions, hence the
increase in witch trials. Works for me.

I saw the ergot idea explored once on U.S. PBS & there are some holes
in the theory. There seems to be no consensus, though.
