Ok, I give up, here are the symptons

Logout - Lose desktop settings.
Create Desktop Link - Lose desktop settings.
Create Desktop File - - Lose desktop settings.
Rename Desktop Item - Lose desktop settings.
Wait A Day Or So - Lose desktop settings.
Look At It In A 'Funny' Way - Lose desktop settings.

How do I get back to KDE 4.3.5? I find the KDE website a total
nightmare to navigate.

OS: Linux 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop x86_64
KDE: 4.4.00 (KDE 4.4.0) "release 224"
System: openSUSE 11.2 (x86_64)

remove kde 4.4 repositorie that you added, (yast2 - software sources)
and do a update in yast2 to get the kde stable version (4.3.5)

Here's one download smart package manager and configure with the appropriate
repositories. It does a better job than YaST2. i am running 11.2 kde 4.4.0
release 224 32bit version. no problems better than kde 4.3.5.
