After running Kubuntu live for a while on a Sony Vaio laptop
I decided to install,big mistake.Wireless wouldn't work on the
installed version but the worst part is it won't work on the live
boot either anymore.Short of hardware failure I can't imagine how this
would happen.Anybody got any ideas?BTW it's really no
loss 98 won't install on the PC and I'd have to buy 2 DVDs from Sony
to install XP.

You've not given nearly enough information to answer your question.

Hardware? Wireless chipset? Version of Kub? What you've done to enable
wireless? What specifically doesn't work? Can it see the network but not
connect? What encryption level? And so forth...

I've got a Vaio PCG-K13 that has a little on/off switch for the wireless
on the front edge that I accidentally switched off once and had me
scratching my head for a few minutes before I realized what had happened.

If that's not the problem, you might try a different distro. Perhaps
Mint or SimplyMEPIS or PCLinuxOS or even Ubuntu. It sounds like you
expect everything to work out of the box without any input on your part.
These distros have a good track record in that regard. Kubuntu tends to
be more cutting edge than most, and can be less stable and more
problematic as a result.

Sony Vaio PCG K33 Atheros AR 5212 Chipset I think it's the latest
Kubuntu
Ubuntu doesn't work out of the box.I'll look for a switch.

The strange part of this (which may be difficult to answer) is why
would installing affect the way the live cd funtions? It did work well
out of the box at first .
Thanks

It can't see any of the wireless networks anymore.I checked the driver
and it seems to be installed.

That's why I'm thinking it's the switch. On my K13 the switch is a
slider on the left of the front edge.

The Atheros chip should be supported out of the box from the kernel, so
it's odd that Kub would work but Ub wouldn't. I suspect that's a
function of the different connection managers used.

Again, you might look at a different distro. If you want KDE4 and a
Debian base (like Kub) then SimplyMEPIS v8.5 would the the way to go.
Personally, I use SM v8.0 KDE3 on my main workstation and SM v8.5 KDE4
on both my old Dell laptop and the recently acquired Sony. Both the
RealTek and Atheros wireless chips were supported natively.
