Hi All ,

I have a Advent Laptop 7109 and a few weeks ago it all went haywire and i
now can't do anything with it and all I get is a black dos screen and also I
can't get into safemode or anything. I get the following message:
The following file is missing windows root\system32\hal.dll

I don't have a disk for this and tried using a recuse disk one of my friends
give me , but it did not work. I have the liceience key etc and its a legal
copy and I am running windows xp media center edition 2005.

Can anyone please help me.

ps. Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong room.

Thanks in advance.

have a look at this.....

quote from http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7109.htm

Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require
any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.

There are two ways to start the recovery -
Restart your computer. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting
System Recovery" is displayed.
In Windows by clicking: Start / All Programs / System Recovery / System
Recovery.
The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied
applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or
programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are
restored at the end of the recovery process.
To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer,
click the Advanced button.
System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied
applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old
disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be
reinstalled.
System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive
including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers
will be reinstalled.
Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

I hope that helps you

Hi thanks for coming back to me and the advice you provided.

I have tried to do as you suggested and I keep getting the message:

windows cannot start because the following files is missing or corrupte.

windows root\system32\hal.dll

please reinstall a copy of the above file.

when I try and press F8 and get the options it first asked me which
operating system, either windows xp or windows media centre and i have tried
both and it just brings me back to the same message about the missing or
corrupt file. I have trie starting in safe mode , last known good
configeration and all the other options and it won't go beyond the error
message I have mentioned. Even when I press f10 repeatedly, it first ask
which system and which either one I choose I get the same message.

Do you have any other suggestions before I throw this computer out the window.

Thanks in advance.

Are you in the UK. If so, PC World are primary retailers for
Advent computers and might even have exclusive rights to the
brand.

Although I would normally be very reluctant to use their
after-sales service, it may be worth visiting the tech department
at your nearest PC World. They might have the necessary
installation disks.
