I have to leave the Mac Pro on 19 hours out of 24 to do backups because the morons at Apple only allow one scheduled on/off event. I can write a script as root that will cyclicly manipulate the pmset settings, but I don't imagine you know what I'm talking about and you'd rant about "root is evil" for 40 lines. You don't have much of an imagination if you think a seasoned administrator wouldn't know about pmset, or would think root is evil. I have a dozen or so scripts on my hard drive that touch pmset in one way or another. ; ) > Oh, right, I'm in your kill-file. Damme. Not exactly. (I'm sure Warren knows this already as he is familiar with pmset, but others might be interested in this detail.) The PMU/SMC supports one set of _repeating_ on/off events (with different times for each day of the week). This can be configured via System Preferences. You can also set up a list of one-off _scheduled_ startup/shutdown events, but there is no user interface to access this feature. It can be controlled via the 'pmset' command line tool (in Terminal). See 'man pmset' for details and look for the 'schedule' subcommand. As Warren implied, to automatically start up or shut down the computer more than once every day, you would need a script to run every time the computer started up (or periodically while it was active), which ensured the next pair of scheduled startup/shutdown events were ready. One use I've seen for this is with EyeTV: if necessary, it will use pmset schedule to start up the computer in time to record the next scheduled programme. -- David Empson dempson(a)actrix.gen.nz

Oates is a well-documented fool that thinks everyone has kill-filed him. Trouble is, he is soooooo idiotic that it is fun to watch his 'performances'. How 'bout this Global Warming?!?
