Hello,

I am new to Virtual PC. I am trying to create two VPCs on my Small Business
Server network. My planned configuration is to buy a souped up XP box with
two XP Virtual PCs running on it. That said, I will need three XP and three
SBS client licenses to have two virtual PCs and what is essentially a dumb
box. Is there any way to not have to use the third license? Is it possible
to install Virtual PC 2007 and configure the two PCs without having to first
install XP on the box?

No, you'll still have to install XP (or another OS) and have a license on
the host. You wouldn't need a SBS license if you didn't join the host to the
domain though...

You could install Linux on the metal and then use VirtualBox (Sun's
virtualization product) on Linux to create two virtual machines for XP
guests.
This way you would not have to pay for the host XP license.
VirtualBox is also a free offering.

What about using Hyper-V with Server 2008 R2 as the underlying OS? I thought
the virtualization-only option was free, with the restriction being that
nothing else runs in that base OS and you have to manage it from a Vista or
Windows 7 machine. You would still need the guest OS licenses.
