From: ohiohall on 15 Oct 2006 09:42 Hello everyone, My goal is to get the best sounding PA that requires the least heavy lifting and is simple to operate. The PA will be mostly used by my wife (who can't throw a 45 lb speaker). Should be powerful enough to easily fill a 300 seat ballroom/club. Mostly used for vocals & horns, sometimes keyboard/guitar. Jazz and R&B. Right now we are using a pair of JBL Eon 15's that we got cheap, but we really, really hate the awkward shape and hideous sound of them - plus they are too heavy! I've pretty much ruled out active speakers - the only ones light enough (FBT MaxX2, DB opera 210) are 10" speakers, which I assume will not be powerful enough, even when combined with a sub (?) Is this a valid assumption? Plus, although we often see these speakers recommended, there is no dealer near us so we have no way to hear them or trial them. We have had a smaller Yorkville system before (3 M160's and one of their powered mixers) and loved the clean warm sound of it - used it on smaller gigs for 12 years. So, I am thinking that a pair of Yorkville NX35's and their M810 or M1610 powered mixer might be a good sounding basic system - and no single component would weigh more than 30 lbs or so. I'm thinking the M1610 - it seems the M810 would be underpowering the speakers a little. We've never heard the NX series speakers, though. Any comparisons between the Yorkville elites and the NX series speakers? Any between the NX and other lightweight speakers such as the FBT or DB or (?). Any other comparable alternatives? Comments? Thanks in advance for your help and expertise!

If you need very high output and a very lightweight box, you might look at going passive and using outboard amps with something like the JBL SRX712M: http://www.jblpro.com/srx700/712M.htm Only 33 LBS and very high output for a 12" 2-way box (131 peak SPL in the specs). They use of neodymium magnets on the drivers are what allow the boxes to be so light with high output. While I'm not generally a fan of JBL speakers boxes (they make some great components though), these sound very good and are worth a listen. Combined with some lightweight amps like the QSC PLX series, you would have a very manageable system weight wise with good sound quality and very high output. Of course with any system that needs to reproduce some real low end, you should have subs. Greg

The PA I have several pairs of FBT MaxX 5As, that have (B+C) Neodium woofers and built-in digital amps. Can lift one (500W, 15") onto stand all by myself ! geoff
