From: Jim Cochrane on 29 Jan 2010 17:56 Thanks to everyone who responded to my post "Building a core i7-based music workstation". There was a lot of great info in your responses and it helped me, along with the online research and review-reading I did, select what looks to be the components of a quality, high-performing, real-time music system. For those who suggested going with the Phenom II instead of the core i7, it does looks like a very good alternative and I considered it, but I decided to go with the core i7. I won't go into why I chose the i7 here, but if anyone is curious, I can go into that in a separate post. In case anyone is interested, here is a list of the components I ordered (which should be all here by Monday), with prices [everything but the DVD-RW drive and the RAM I bought from newegg.com]: 34.89 [Lite-On 24X Serial ATA DVDRW-LT-IHAS324-24x] 159.99 [Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case] 99.99 [Mushkin XP-650 650W ATX12V SLI Ready Modular Power Supply] ($40.00 Mail-in Rebate) 269.99 [GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard] 288.99 [Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920] 159.99 [Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM] 74.99 [Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler] 38.99 [GIGABYTE GV-NX84S512HP GeForce 8400 GS 512MB Video Card] 258.15 [BL3KIT25664TB1608 6GB kit (2GBx3), Ballistix Tracer 240-pin DIMM (with LEDs) Upgrade for a Giga-Byte GA-EX58-UD5 (rev. 1.0) System] ($239.99, Approximate tax: $10.17, Shipping charges: Express shipping (2 business days) $7.99 Estimated order subtotal: $258.15) Jim --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: news(a)netfront.net ---
