My current ISP is making a mess - their system is
grossly over-loaded and bloated.

Can anyone recommend an honest, competent and
reasonably priced web-host?

I've been out of this field for a while and am
rusty on the topic.

TIA

No relation, not even a second cousin.
;)
They're not the cheapest, but with hundreds of servers, true 99.9 and in
biz since '97, yes, that's not a typo, they will keep you up and running no
bs. They also so data storage/backup.

I used to use WebFarm when it was NZ owned. After it was sold to the
Aussies I shopped around and found that I was being grossly
overcharged for both my .com & .net domain registrations and
webhosting.

Long story short: I now use GoDaddy for both. Very cheap for both
domain registration and hosting. Without going back in my records I
can't give you a price because I've saved even more $$ by paying for
multiple renewals five years in advance. IIRC it's costing me around a
quarter of what I used to pay.

Their website is tacky, busy and a bit difficult to navigate until you
get used to them trying to sell you something more at every turn. But
if you have patience and stick with it, it's well worth the savings.

BTW - I haven't had to use them much, and it's always been my mistake,
but their customer support has been excellent. As far as I know, my
websites have never been down since I started using them almost two
years ago.

Sorry. I thought I was responding to a New Zealand computer group.

However, I still recommend http://www.godaddy.com/ as their prices for
a 10gig/300gig data transfer package is only $4.74 a month vs $5.99
for a 0.75gig/20gig data transfer package from Axis.
