From: Menno Hershberger on 22 May 2010 21:14 I have a Dell here with XP Pro SP3. It boots up and then logs itself off, leaving the login screen with the username. If you click on that, it boots briefly and then logs right back off. It does the same thing in Safe Mode, even using the Administrator account. A while back a windows update which I *believe* was supposed to be KB977165 was creating havoc with similar symptoms. So using an installation CD I went into the recovery console and uninstalled that update. However the problem remains. Anyone got any idea what might be doing this? Keep in mind I can't get into Windows to do any registry editing, so whatever I do will have to be through the recovery console or with a Hiren's or Bart's CD. Thanks. -- --- Long live Fat32! ---

Type this into a Google search box "userinit.exe" then try one of the many solutions you find there.

Finally did a repair install using an old restore CD with no service packs. You know how messy that can be. But I got it done... eventually. -- --- Long live Fat32! ---
