I'm a college professor and would love to just bring my iPad to the classroom to give Keynote presentations to go with my lectures. But as a fair number of my lectures also involve demonstrations with Matlab, this scenario would be practical only if Matlab were also running on the iPad. The challenge for Mathworks of course will be to choose what functionality to leave out...

Even though present tablet computers like the iPad are limited, it would in my opinion be a strategic move by Mathworks to start into this market which is likely to be a very important one for education.

My first thought when I learned about the iPad was "imagine Remote Desktop Connection on an iPad". It would be a great remote interface to a real computer, but even if someone managed to port MATLAB to the iPad, it would be infuriatingly slow and/or crippled.

Another possibility would be an X-server on the iPad, so you could run a linux (or Mac?) "server" that just feeds the MATLAB display to the iPad. If such a program doesn't already exist for the iPhone/iPod touch, I can't imagine it would be too difficult to port an existing X-server.
