I've had a request to quote the design of a pin-for-pin replacement of
the MAX4581.

Not being on the buying side of such stuff, is this really a
hard-to-get part?

It's not a terribly difficult thing to design (I did the ON-Semi re-do
of the 4051-52-53 series many years ago), but I'm suspicious that I'm
being used as a price-reduction tool :-)

I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Could well be.

Digikey stocks them

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll

,not in any significant quanttities. Maxim shows them as still in
production as well

http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/1851/t/al

so I think your suspicions are correct.

So if they're $0.63 in 1k quantities... and Jim can spin a design such that
they cost, oh, say, $0.33... seems like someone must be using upwards of
100k/year to make it worth the NRE costs? Intriguing...

Maybe an Audio product. 5mhz bandwith is too low for todays video. But
the L datasheet mentions DSL, perhaps Telco/STB related.

Cheers
