I started having problems with Parallels coming up telling me it had
'Input/Output Errors' trying to access one of XP images.

I tried rebooting in to single user mode and ran 'fsck -y' & 'fsck -fy'
and was told the drive was fine. The S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive is
also report to be fine.

When I try to copy the XP image file I get a -36 error, essentially an
ioErr, but I have no idea why.

Nothing I can use to check the drive is reporting any errors. Any
suggestions?

Have you tried something which does a surface scan of the drive? (For
example, TechTool Pro.)

fsck just checks the directory structures.

S.M.A.R.T. is not a reliable indicator of a good drive (but should be
believed if it says there is a problem).

Error -36 when reading a file from a hard drive almost certainly means
you have bad sectors in the content of that file.

Typical, and just days after I downloaded the latest Time Capsule update
that I just found out deleted *all* my previous backups. Grrrr!

Depends where it's being copied to. Since Snow Leopard upgrade, I've
started getting pretty regular -36 errors copying to any kind of
external drive. It's got so bad, I now do almost all of my copying
tasks as root on the command line (that seems to work fine). The
problem occurs on laptop and desktop, and with multiple drives, so I've
ruled out a common cause (other than my bad mojo of course....)

By "any kind of external drive" what do you mean? USB, firewire, NAS,
SAN, eSATA, flash, hard drive, iDrive?
