Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)
8301 Greensboro Drive
McLean VA
Southern Corner of Westpark Drive and Greensboro Drive
Agenda

1. Prepared Talks

Mathematica Applied to Bayesian Statistics, by Pramud Rawat

Abstract. I will briefly describe why a Bayesian approach is needed when
prior knowledge of probability distributions is imperfect (and thus must be
supplemented with data collection experiments). I will also describe the
special role of the beta distribution in predictive statistics that combine
prior and new knowledge. Drawing from business, engineering, and medicine,
examples will include mathematical derivations for students who aren't math
majors.

Constructing Equivalence Relations, by Bruce Colletti

Abstract. In this brief talk (not delivered last month), Bruce will
demonstrate how to use Combinatorica (a built-in package of Mathematica) to
build and display equivalence relations.

2. Mathematica Gems and Discoveries

- Sharing of Mathematica programming oddities
- Applications of Mathematica to some areas of science
- Something recently read and worth sharing

3. Mathematica Questions, Possible Approaches and Discussion

4. New Business

- Select next meeting presentation, time and place
