What does the following error mean?

[rsNonAggregateInMatrixCell] The Value expression for the textbox ?textbox2?
references a field outside an aggregate function. Value expressions in
matrix cells should be aggregates, to allow for subtotaling.

The sub-totals did not work because I was not using an aggregate in the group
column. I tried to convert the group column into text which caused the
sub-totals not to be displayed.
