I have the same problem. I checked the services and the SQL server is on
"automatic". If I start the SQL service manually, it fails by saying:

Windows could not start the SQL server (MSSMLBIZ) on Local Computer. For
more information, review the System Event Log. If this ia a non Microsoft
service, contact the servie vendor, adn refer to service-specific error code
3417.

After the failing installation of SQL update 2 package the hotfix
information is:

I have also been struggling with the inability to update this SP, however
have stumbled upon a solution that appears to have worked.
I am running Vista and after reading Peter Saddow's comments, I went to the
services folder and right mouse clicked on all four entries for SQL Server,
those being (MSSMLBIZ); Active Directory; Browser; & VSS Writer.
In the properties tab I change all of them to "Automatic", then went to the
"Log On" tab and checked "Local System Account" then checked the "Allow
service to interact with desktop".
Click Apply and OK.
After doing this, I then reopened Windows update, asked to install the
update and it worked.
I would like to hear if this works for others.

I am not comfortable (even though qualified) to make such changes. The whole
Update process is to make sure such things dont have to be done. How
different is this from any other OS?
Its a pity this problem has persisted for more than a month and we still
dont have a fix for it. Every night my laptop asks me to reboot since it
needs to install this uninstallable update. PITA really.

From: Dr. George on
I uninstalled the original Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express that was on my
computer and wouldn't accept the Vista Windows Update for SQL 2005 SP2. Then
I installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack 2 from the
Microsoft website. Afterwards, the Windows Vista Update notice for SQL SP2
no longer appeared on my update list. However, the SQL Server is no longer
MSSMLBIZ; it now shows SQLEXPRESS. Each of the three services in SQL Server
Configuraton Manager are running and set to automatic. When I set the
service log on properties for a built-in account, I am unable to get MS
Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager to "communicate with the server"
regardless of which setting I use (Network Service, Local Service, or Local
System). I think that I need a Microsoft Certified Technician to visit...
