If one did not know the standard precedence of arithmetic operations, one would certainly want extra parentheses. For example 2 m^2 (s - 1) might be misinterpreted as (2 m) ^ (2 (s - 1)). Even worse for m^2 (s - 1)^2, which for one order of operations has the added benefit of causing confusion due to the non-associativity of exponentiation. - Tim |
