I am trying to get an idea of mobile coverage at a place called Plas Caerdeon LL42 1TH
I plugged the postcode into here:

http://www.three.co.uk/_standalone/Coverage_checker_mobile

but to be honest I am not sure what it's trying to tell me, the area is green
but that isn't on the key. I suppose the whole area has no signal, why can't it be clearer!

http://search.orange.co.uk/ouk/portal/coverage.html

seems to be clearer, saying there is basic 2G coverage from Orange

The green indicates it's within a national park. I live in a big
green blob. :)

If you zoom out a little you'll see a few dark blobs. These indicate
"Indoor & outdoor coverage." The rest of the map is a little lighter
which indicates "Outdoor coverage."

Seems like it.

I wouldn't hold your breath, though. My post code gives the same
result as the one you supplied. But here basic coverage amounts to
having to standing outside in the middle of a road waving your mobile
phone in the air to send a text message. Voice calls - forget it. :)
