Close enough to be worried... if you live anywhere on this planet then
that's enough to be worried ;)

I have seen a jpg of such a device, and read of an even smaller version
the size of a 15" tire to be held over the head like a salon hair dryer.

But when asked a question, if the answer is retrieved from memory, then
the mid brain lites up. But if a lie is constructed, then that activates
the prefrontal lobes. The trick is to ask a question that the subject
has not prepared an answer for. Then the diff is really obvious.

But even easier than this is http://www.paulekman.com which has a CD you
can get that will enable you to spot lies in conversation. Especially if
you have high speed high res video to step freeze frame by frame thru a
suspect's responses.

The FAILURE to apply Ekman's system at road blocks or airports using
video of faces during the questioning of who wants to pass is a clue
that they do not want to win these wars but milk them for the profits by
the suppliers of the military industrial complex.
