From: T i m on 16 Feb 2010 12:25 Hi All, I'm playing around with a WHS and it's currently running quite nicely on an Asus K8V-XE board with 1G RAM and a Sempron 2600+ CPU (Palermo). I have been monitoring the power consumption at the wall and with two Samsung 500G drives and a Gb Ethernet card it's drawing about 63W idle. I did have WHS running on an old T-20 Thinkpad (with no screen, 13W) and whilst it ran (a bit warm) it didn't have Gb Ethernet, 4 x SATA2 and an eSATA connector (handy for a backup drive) etc etc. So, I believe the 2600+ Sempron doesn't support 'Cool n Quiet' and I'd have to go to a 3000+ to get that but how well does it work? Would it make much of a difference to the overall power drawn do you think please (based on the fact that many servers are idle most their lives)? Or, would I be able to use a 'mobile' Socket 754 chip in there and if so which one please? Cheers, T i m

I used one for years, a Turion MT-37. But I did take care to pick a motherboard that supported it. You have that covered, though. Other than that, lowering CPU voltage and clock speed, if possible, is always a good plan for a low power system.

Sorry, are you saying that my motherboard (K8V-XE) *will* take a s754 Mobile chip? > >Other than that, lowering CPU voltage and clock speed, if possible, is >always a good plan for a low power system. I did look at that very quickly yesterday but wasn't sure what to change and by what amount etc (never done any under/overclocking before). I mean, what sort of increments am I looking at and for what sort of results please (ballpark etc). I think the above is why I am keen to try the Coon n Quiet, fast CPU when I need it and slow one when I don't. ;-) Cheers, T i m

Sorry, are you saying that my motherboard (K8V-XE) *will* take a > s754 Mobile chip? Well yes, there's a bunch of Turions on its the compatibility list. I actually had one or two boards of the K8V family, but I can't remember if I had a K8V-XE exactly. If you look up K8V-XE on the Asus webpage, there is a "CPU Support List". Of course, it may be hard to find those chips now. >>Other than that, lowering CPU voltage and clock speed, if possible, is >>always a good plan for a low power system. > > I did look at that very quickly yesterday but wasn't sure what to > change and by what amount etc (never done any under/overclocking > before). I haven't really done it either, but basically you lower clock speed to whatever still provides enough performance and and then lower voltage as long as the system remains stable. But it does need some experimentation.

Soo, I think that from that very handy table my board will take the Turion ML30 so is there an obvious choice re model if I'm looking for low power? I mean, for each die do they all tend to draw the same power (irrespective of clock rate? I'm guessing faster = more power hungry)? Also, would the board be able to use of the Cool n Quiet feature via the PowerNow! feature (I read they are similar but not identical). With the price of second hand chips I don't mind experimenting a bit as long as I'm not going to damage anything. Cheers, T i m
