From: raz4183 on 1 Mar 2010 12:26 We are running MS Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 Enterprise edition. I'm working on a project to move all of our mailboxes from their current drive to a new drive on the same server. I have two users with large mailboxes - one is over 11GBs in size and the other is over 5GBs in size. The Transaction Log files are located on a separate drive with a total size of 9.99GBs. During an average day the Trans log files may go as low as 9.00GB of available free space. During the process of moving mailboxes the size of the Trans Log files shrinks quite a bit depending on how many mailboxes I move until the next backup which resets the size to 9.99. What I need to know is if the total size of the Trans log file drive is too small to handle moving the two mailboxes I mentioned above - will I run out of disk space before the move is completed? If I move a 5GB mailboxe will it take take 5GBs off of the trans log files? I can increase the size of the trans log files but I would like to try to avoid this if I could.

You may want to enable circular log files while you move the mailboxes. Obviously, execute a full backup first, and re-enable normal logging immediately after the move. This is the only scenario where enabling circular logging makes sense. I definitely never recommend it otherwise. :) I do the same thing as you when it comes to storing logs separately. You can run a backup, temporarily move them to a larger partition, and then move them back to where they are now. The risk is minimal then. -- Leonid S. From: raz4183 on 2 Mar 2010 10:26 Since I have all 3 mailbox stores pointing to the same transaction log file, do I enable circular logging on all 3 mailbox stores or just the source store? Verify that you have sufficient free space on your transaction log drives. If you do not have sufficient free space on your transaction log drive for transaction log file generation, you could temporarily turn on circular logging on the General tab of the storage group's properties page." I tested working with an Exchange server with 3 mailbox stores at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtuallabs/bb499043.aspx You can control transaction logs only at storage group level and do not have the option to enable or disable transaction logs at mailbox store level. Thus, the answer to your question is "yes" as you do not have another option. You could also simply move transaction logs to another location, but that would momentarily make Exchange unavailable. I say momentarily because you would normally do that immediately after completing a full backup. -- Leonid S.
