From within the initramfs rescue shell, if available.

This requires that /var/log is available, which is not going to happen
when the final root fails to mount.

The old dmesg is saved as /var/log/dmesg.old

Or if you boot from a cd boot disk, it will not be overwritten at all.

I got it as I thought I could, afterwards and from a another booted
system. It's been a loooooooong series of sesssions.

Your hunch that the sata pinouts 1&2/3&4 are somehow separated is
beginning to look like a major suspect. The mobo manual is rather tight
lipped about it. For years I've presumed that they were just that 4 nice
sata drives and as I never had more than two I never ran into any trouble.

Now

1 booted p-9 of disk 320gb-A in pos-1, 320gb-B in pos-2, 500gb in pos-3
"could not find /dev/sda9"

2 booted p-9 of disk 320B in pos-1, nothing in pos-2, 500 in pos-3
"could not find /dev/sda9"

In the above only the 320gb-A driove had a bootable partition #9

Then

3 booted p-9 of 320gb-B in pos-1, nothing in pos-2/3, 2000gb-A in pos-4

I again got

"could not find /dev/sda9"

but the boot continued. Here I got results because I more or less
successfully booted a suse-10.3 partition #9 ...but... on the 4th drive
instead!

fstab swap, fdisk against /dev/sda and such ALL confirmed the
system was in fact on the 4th drive, 2000gb-A.

Grub > root (hd0,14) [from within OS]
"Error 18: selected cyl. not supported by BIOS"
..... not likely with a 320gb drive

Grub > root (hd0,4) [from within OS]
"..fs unknown, partition type 82"
.... that's a swap partition on the 2000gb-A drive

Contrary to what I had presumed, with 'a' kernel booted and grub loaded
within it, the disk numbers given by grub are no longer the bios
numbers. Giving the same arguments to grub before the boot would hit the
correct disk and its partitions. That disk being 320gb and its #5 being
vfat neither of the above errors surface until booted.

All of the above confirms the finding that the 4th drive was being
booted as the 'final' one :-)

I can also boot with a disk in only #3 or only #4 or #3 & #4, there
again the 2/3 border not being crossed.

The only option might be to get another board, one that offers a
straight series 4 or more SATA connectors and no PATA (just guessing if
there are such boards).

=======================================================
I then fished out the message. Looks like if a same-number bootable
partition on the other side of 1&2 exists then it will boot instead. A
kernel/modules conflict then arises and I'm only guessing that this may
be because the target kernel has loaded but is now somewhere else and
can't find the matching modules sets (?).
