Just did a up and coming artist the rider was written for two different
situations, one where they flew in and needed everything, the other they
would have a tour bus and carry their back line and some support gear
well the rider was very specific, Cut and pasted
"A. FOH console is to consist of fifty six (56) channels.
Ex: Consoles accepted: A. T. I. PARAGON II, YAMAHA PM 5000 or 4000, MIDAS
XL-4,
MIDAS HERITAGE 3000. NO EXCEPTIONS!"

well they did not fly in but brought their own support gear
a pair of M7's
wonder how they could get along on those lowly m7's when the rider states
"A. FOH console is to consist of fifty six (56) channels.
Ex: Consoles accepted: A. T. I. PARAGON II, YAMAHA PM 5000 or 4000, MIDAS
XL-4,
MIDAS HERITAGE 3000. NO EXCEPTIONS!"

I guess when you are playing with your own money things are a bit diffrent
this rider was updated feb 2010 so I was not dealing with last tours specs

BTW the band as 19 inputs, and was demanding a 56 channel desk

he he he... looks familiar. Is this the one that wanted 16 monitor mixes and
two kinds of IEMs? not to mention bringing in a video wall for an outdoor
show?... oh and entire side stage for the guitar tech.

I find it typical that management is "cookie cutter" with their
technical riders. There's one company that basically sends the same
rider for every act they're booking. Then I get the stage plot for the
artist and it's often drastically different. I love it when they spec
a $250k system for a room that holds less than 500 people. And those
high channel counts must be compensation for a small penis. I too get
requests for minimum channel counts of 48 when the band uses less than
30 or even 20. Lame.

Tech riders are done that way for two reasons. One is to get the
promoter and the sound company to contact the artist's tech people and
negotiate so the artist's tech knows what they're coming in to, or to
get the promoter to hire a different sound company. The second is that
if the promoter and sound company don't contact the artist the artist
has a legal escape clause to cancel if the sound company turns out to be
Nightmare Audio.

Riders sometimes/used to spec '24 channel console of professional
quality' but they ended up with Carvins or old Peaveys or worse, now
they spec brand and model so if you don't call they can refuse a poor
quality PA.

They also spec more channels than they need so an opening act can be put
on different channels so the headliner's settings don't get altered.

There are too many idiots with trust funds trying to be pro sound
companies, when you're traveling all over to play you have to protect
your reputation, the rider is the first place that happens.
