If FirstCap will work on Win7, it should give you any combination of
controls you wish. It will play a sound that yo choose, show a
colored icon, flash the icon, and it can be set to turn off the
capslock function or link that function with other keys, so that (for
example) capslock will not work unless the shift key is pressed at the
same time. This helps avoid hitting it when typing 'a'.
There are even other thing you can do, like controlling the numlock
key.
Kind of a strange little menu GUI, but it only takes couple minutes to
find everything.
