That's not correct, there are indeed Apple tools to do patches and
updates automatically and remotely.

This particular IT dept presumably won't have them though...

This is bollocks, and a typical knee-jerk reaction. This was the line
given by my small higher learning institution for years. When I was
appointed full time, I asked for a mac, and got one. Several of the
fulltime staff now have them (including the principal) and while IT
don't exacly support them they don't talk about security any longer.
