If so I recall that something can happen where the port gets into a confused state (indicated by a red light inside the port), and resetting it somehow fixes the issue. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. Yes. As I said, the problem had to be elsewhere as tht issue wouldn't give "no output device found". My friend reports that it's back, and she swears she did not do anything. Which to me suggests a stuck switch in the headphone socket that unstuck itself, perhaps when the computer was moved slightly. -- <http://www.decohen.com> Send e-mail to the Reply-To address. I forget the actual specs. You may well be right. By "resetting" did you mean resetting the PRAM? Or resetting something else? Resetting PRAM was one of the things I was going to get her to try, but for the moment it seems to have cured itself. -- <http://www.decohen.com> Send e-mail to the Reply-To address. If your audio out port has a red light coming from it, it means the sound port is stuck or confused into thinking you have an optical audio device plugged in. The solution is to plug and unplug something into the jack a few times to reset it (until the red light shuts off). -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. Next time tell her to look closely at the port to see if a red light is shining inside of it. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
