While doing that I went into the Control Panel and adjusted the sound settings. The sound with the headphones was fine. No hum. Then I went back to the speakers and, miraculously, also no hum. Magic! I think the sound settings had gotten screwed up last week and when I reset them things resumed working right. Thanks for getting me back on track. Jerry
