Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated. Tried all the

In which case Rowland's suggestion of a permissions repair may well be
worth a try. Shouldn't do any harm anyway.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I had the MacBook Air for a few hours
and managed to get everything working fine. Never got to the bottom of
the inability to delete mail messages but fixed this by creating the
account again and deleting the old one. He had 400MB of free space on
his hard drive which can't have been good!
