Google's online document and spreadsheet editors will no longer offer
offline access as of May 3, and it's unclear when it will return.

So it's back to Open Office, etc, for those of who can't be certain
we'll have access to Google's cloud 24/7?

Where's my trusted USB stick...

This is the problem with "cloud computing". Stuff will go away and
leave you hanging.

Right. I guess I agreed that Google can shut me out whenever it deems
this to be helpful to Google. The first step to make it a pay version ?

It's a temporary part of their conversion to HTML5.From the article:
""As a result, we need to temporarily remove offline support for Docs
starting May 3rd, 2010. We know that this is an important feature for
some of you, and we are working hard to bring a new and improved HTML5-
based offline option back to Google Docs."

They know they have to have offline capability to stay competitive.
