Hi,

I've setup a brand new Maxtor 300 Gb drive, and smartd keeps telling me
this :

Device: /dev/hdd, 100 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Device: /dev/hdd, 104 Offline uncorrectable sectors

I wonder if this something acceptable for such a big drive, or a sign
that it won't live very long. Full smartctl log is below.

Thanks for any advice!

Nope.

Yep. Run Maxtor's PowerMax on it and get a replacement.

It is a sign for concern IMO. You should keep an eye on these numbers
and run a long smart selftest (smartctl -t long <device>) regularly
and see whether the defect sectors get more. I do this as cron-job
or anacron-job (for not allways running machines) every 14 days for
all my disk. You should do it manually at least once now and check
for smart attribute changes. If everything stays the same, do the
regular checks every 2 weeks or so.

I have one Maxtor disk with around 150 reallocated sectors.
It has been running fine with no additional problems for 2 years now.
In other disks, this was the first sign of doom.

As for smartd telling you multiple times, I think you can configure it
in /etc/smartd.conf to just tell you once per change. The man-page
for smartd.conf has the details (at least on Debian).

It did increase during my first test, and it is stable. I will make the
drive suffer a bit more and not trust it for important data.
And I'll do as Rod suggested : run Powermax on it.

Yep ; I'll look.

Thanks for the advices to you and Rod !

It was good advice: Powermax told me to ask for a RMA... Better replace
it now than too late...

Thanks!
