My own thought on the defense of cranks is that, for any particular poster, it is either not /necessary/ to defend them or it is not /possible/ to defend them. The posters populating sci.math and sci.logic are extremely diverse in opinion, enough so, that one really needs to work hard at being unreasonable enough to chase away /everybody/. Even JSH receives some serious attention -- not the adulation he feels he deserves, but such is life. If, hypothetically, a poster were sufficiently obnoxious to be able to discourage everyone from responding to their ideas, then no amount of "defense" on the part of some third party is going to change that.
