Okay, let me be specific. I had a sub-account, hosted by MIT, back in
the era when USENET had hundreds, not thousands, of users.
I followed the Atari and Amiga groups for personal pleasure, and the VAX
group for professional reasons. Later, I added the Macintosh group.

The majority of the postings I ran across fell into one of two groups:
1) Help - I get no support from my computer vendor and I have a problem
2) Here's this neat program that I developed and you can have it for
free. - yes, most software was free in those days.

Rarely did I find a 'you're an idiot' posting. The discourse I did see
was polite and reasoned - unlike the recent 'town hall' fiascos.

I'm sorry the world is a lot less polite now-a-days, and perhaps you are
too.

Mike

PS: Those USENET groups persuaded me to get a Macintosh, and I've never
regretted it.

I'm almost 72, but I got into computers in 1961...
