When I was there for a couple of days last week, I found that Orange
reception was dismal. I had to use my Lebara SIM which I believe works
through Vodafone.

According to the Orange coverage maps, 2G coverage in that area is
fairly reasonable, but 3G coverage is almost non-existant.

Do you have a 3G phone?

If so I suspect it was finding just enough 3G signal to hold onto and
not falling back to 2G.
