From: John Malone on 8 Apr 2006 15:05 The Image on the first page of the file has a mask... Here is the error message I get when trying to downsample the file. The PDF contained image masks that were not downsampled. Downsampled as best I can then uploaded here... http://www.xmas-i-am.com/30042.pdf See if that works? BTW File size now down to 312KB Are you making the files? Do you have access to the First page Image? John Malone ====================== "littlegreenmen" <webforumsuser(a)macromedia.com> wrote in message news:e17f7n$kbv$1(a)forums.macromedia.com... | I've tried posting my problem in the Adobe forum, but have not received much | help (the macromedia forum has always seemed to be more helpful and | responsive), and I'm really hoping someone here can help me out. I created | some pdfs with acrobat professional 7 on a mac. they are 2 pages long. the | first page has some pictures and the 2nd page is just text. the pdfs were | created from 2 png files (1 png file per page). I can view the pdf just fine | locally from a computer. I uploaded them to a pdf folder on my website. I | created links to the pdfs. The links work great. They go right to the correct | pdf like the should. They even open in a new window like they should. My | problem is two-fold. About half the time opening from the website crashes my | browser (either IE or Firefox on windwos XP; the links work great in Safari | running on OS X 10.4). I've tried using Adobe reader 6 and 7 and get the same | error with each. (sometimes I get the following error message from acrobat | reader 'The instruction at ?0x2d828acd? referenced memory at ?0x00000008?. The | memory could not be ?read?.'). The other half of the time it doesn't crash but | it will only display the 2nd page (the pure text page). If i go back and | reopen the pdf sometimes it works, other times if i click on page 2 then back | to page 1 of the pdf it will display correctly. I thought I wasn't giving it | enough time to load so I let it sit for about 5 or 6 minutes which is plenty of | time for a 700k file. I am able to view other pdfs from other websites just | fine. Is there something in Dreamweaver, some kind of code that I need to have | so the pdfs will display properly? I thought it was just a link and as long as | the pdf file was working it would display properly. I have looked on | Macromedia's forum, Adobe's forum, and google and haven't had any luck. Any | help on resolving my dilema would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance. |
From: littlegreenmen on 8 Apr 2006 15:42 first off, thank y'all very much for the help so far. in response to the first reply; the freezing and crashing is what happens to me too. but, when i view the pdf locally (not in a browser) it works great. so, i guess that means there's some compatibility issue with the pdfs I created and web browsers. Also, how I created them is kind of bizzare. I have a publisher file on my pc that I use as a template. I receive the floorplans and elevations from my architect in cad format. i import those cad files into illustrator cs2 on my mac to clean them up and add the masking for the trees and the shadows. Then I save the 2 pictures as png files and import them into publisher. i then export each page of the 2-page publisher file as a png document. i then transfer those back to my mac and create the pdf using acrobat professional 7, but i saved them for version 6 or later. i know that's a little of work, but i couldn't find a better way to do it considering i have to use publisher on the pc and illustrator and acrobat on the mac. In response the the 2nd reply; yes, that worked great, and yes i have access to the 1st page information. I tried something different just to see what happened, and it worked. I have flashpaper 2 on my pc. i took the pdf that i created from acrobat on the mac and converted that pdf to a pdf using flashpaper on my pc. i then uploaded those to another site of mine, and those files worked create. they worked just like the one from the 2nd reply. i would like to use acrobat on my mac just becuase the images seemed to come out cleaner than they did when i use flashpaper. also, the files is about 30% larger after flashpaper. if you want to view the new pdfs created from flashpaper the link is http://www.severagroup.com/pdfs/ (the new files are 'test' and 'test2'). Do y'all know what i would need to do to create the pdfs using acrobat, but do where they will load properly on the web? Or is it a function of something I'm doing in illustrator, which is where i'm applying the alpha masking? thank you again for all the help.
From: John Malone on 8 Apr 2006 17:44 BTW: I think they look great... What I was thinking was to merge (or flatten) the layers before saving. Or at least B4 creating the PDF file... Haven't used Publisher much But I think you are using "Pack & Go" and I don't think there is a merge option in it. So maybe use illustrator in the Mac to flatten the image B4 going to PDF? I think it is the png with masks that might be causing the problem. Just a thought. From: littlegreenmen on 10 Apr 2006 14:33 i apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but how do i either downsample or flatten the image. and you are correct. it is something with the png files. i tried making pdfs of the individual pieces and all of the pictures had the same problem. again, thank you for all your help.

OK first in the photo editor you should have a way to "merge" or "flatten" all the layers. But another way is to save it as another format that doesn't support layers like (jpg, bmp, tif, ect.) Then when you put it into the PDF go to file | Reduce File Size... In the window that opens select the version you want the compatibility with and hit OK. That should reduce the file size ("downsampleing" the graphics). Now you should have a file that will work and is as small as possible Hope this helps John Malone ====================== "littlegreenmen" <webforumsuser(a)macromedia.com> wrote in message news:e1e8dv$9ij$1(a)forums.macromedia.com... |i apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but how do i either downsample or | flatten the image. and you are correct. it is something with the png files. | i tried making pdfs of the individual pieces and all of the pictures had the | same problem. again, thank you for all your help. | |
