Does anyone know of a free painting program for Windows that can
do color gradients? My main requirements are -

1. It should be able to fill an enclosed area of any shape (as
with a bucket tool) with a smooth color gradient of any range in
any specified direction. This feature was common with paint progs
for the Amiga OS. I've tried Photofiltre but it can do gradients
only in the X or Y direction, and the fill area has to be
pre-selected.

2. Easy to use. It doesn't have to have tons of features. I've
heard about GIMP, but also heard that it has a steep learning
curve. Something like MS Paint is fine as long as it can do
gradients.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks for the reply. I tried out Paint.NET briefly some time
ago, but not specifically for its gradient fill feature. I tried
it again just now and it does have the option to place the
gradient in any direction. However, Paint.NET, along with some
other programs I tested, require the fill area to be demarcated
first with the select tool.

This approach is probably useful for some applications, but what
I'd like to be able to do is to use the gradient fill tool the
same way as a uniform fill (bucket) tool without having to define
the fill area with the select tool. This way, the boundaries of
the fill area is determined by what is already on the picture.
