From: Daniel Prince on 20 Apr 2010 08:45 It looks to me as if the only difference between the Phenom II X3 and the Athlon II X3 is that the Phenom II X3 has an L3 Cache of 6MB. How much difference does an L3 Cache make? What types of programs are affected the most by an L3 Cache? What types of programs are affected the least by an L3 Cache? Thank you in advance for all replies. -- Whenever I hear or think of the song "Great green gobs of greasy grimey gopher guts" I imagine my cat saying; "That sounds REALLY, REALLY good. I'll have some of that!"

I'll have some of that!" Many programs (of all types) do see improvement with big L3 caches. Unfortunately, without being able to turn said cache off, it's hard to guess. Right now, I can't think of any specific programs in either case.. Something to be aware of: Many late Phenom X2 and X3 CPUs are unlockable to 4 cores. Apparently AMD's having such good results with their 4-core manufacturing processes that there are very few fallouts which became X2s or X3s. They have contracts to fill, so they are taking perfectly good X4s and selling them as X2s and 3s. Google "unlocking Phenom cores"... I paid $70 for a Phenom II x2 545 "Black Edition" (was already discontinued when i bought it). It ended up as a Phenom II X4 945 that was selling for $150-180 I've run extensive testing on all 4 cores and haven't found any issues, except: TDP went from 65W to 125W on full cook modes. I was using an older Antec 350watt supply that I had on hand, with no "power budget" left for the added draw. I ended up replacing the Antec with a Thermaltake TR2 RX 650watt as there was no difference in price from the 500W version. Oh well... what I saved on the CPU was about what i spent on the power supply, but I now have lots of power for vidcard etc upgrades.

BTW, Athlon II's Level 2 cache is bigger than that of P II! :) -- @~@ Might, Courage, Vision, SINCERITY. / v \ Simplicity is Beauty!
