I recently found a tool by Cisco[1] with which you can compare and if necessary correct differences between printer driver installations on a local windows host and a remote samba host. It took me about 10 minutes with these tools to get our previously semi-functional Brother drivers working like they should. For the printer in question (a Brother HL-4040CN) it could tell me some 61 registry entries were missing on the samba server and it kindly corrected that for me. It's too bad the tool itself is not publicly accessible.
