From: LAS on 24 Jun 2010 20:55 I unhooked my laptop (Dell Inspiron 730) from all peripherals, electricity and internet and worked on it for a while. When I hooked it back up I found that when I typed numbers I got ! for 1 and $ for 4, etc. I played around a lot with num lock, function/num lock, caps lock, etc., etc. I finally detemined that if I booted without the port replicator (Targus) plugged in, I got the numbers OK, but if I plugged in the port replicator I immediately got the problem, even when no peripherals were plugged into the port replicator. Here is what I have tried. Working OK - Plug in port replicator with no peripherals in top USB port> ##> problem appears> If CAPS LOCK light is on< i get lower case> IF CAPS LOCK LIGHT IS OFF< I GET UPPER CASE> Unplug port replicator. Problem goes away. (??) Working OK. Plug in port replicatgor with no peripherals in bottom USB port. # problem returns> just like described above> in addition to upper?lower case problem on non_alphabetic keys< back arrow highlights everything> Unplug port replicator - problem goes away. Any suggestions? It's not reasonable to suspect hardware problems with the port replicator, as it was working fine til I unplugged everything. It was just sitting on the table til I plugged stuff back in again. If this is too "software" for this hardware forum, could you direct me somewhere else? TIA LAS
From: LAS on 26 Jun 2010 23:10 I was advised to go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager and uninstall my keyboard. It gets re-installed on re-boot. That seemed to do the trick.
