I was wondering if this is possible. I've had the same phone number for a
hwile and want to keep it. Basically I want to port from virgin mobile on
pay as you go to a t mobile contract is this possible ?

The chap in store seemed unsure and unable to advise any further...

It is. You need to ring Virgin customer services and ask for your PAC
(porting authorisation code). Then, give this code to T-Mobile and
(usually) 3 working days later your number will be moved across and
your Virgin SIM disconnected.

Expect some hours disruption to your service on "transfer day".

I port my number fairly regularly, so it does work.

I did have a particular problem once where calls for my answerphone (divert
on busy etc.) was sent to a completely random number after transfer. I
recommend you "cancel all diverts" after your new service is up and
running. I can't prove the porting process caused the random divert but
better safe than sorry!
