R click on file you wish to open. Then select " Open with " an then
programme you wish to use to open it with from the list shown. Normally the
programme used to create the file is at the top of the list but if it is not
there then click on " Other " and find the programme you want. Next time you
wish to open the file the programme needed should be at the top of the list.

I like to choose the size I'm working with, use filters, adjust image
size, not choose from a limited list I have no control over, rotate
freely, and do many other things, some of which I can do with GC, all of
which and more I can do with another inexpensive program, ColorIt, and
both of these useful programs are preempted by this piece of
kindergarten trash. Clear? Since
Preview can do so little, I fail to see why it's set up to preempt its
betters!

Because none of the apps you mention come pre-installed with OS X, so
Preview is the only option on a clean install. If other apps you
subsequently install don't make themselves the default handlers for the
file types you want them to, that their fault, not Preview's.

the subsequent installation is the downgraded Preview dragged in by that
nasty 10.6.4 OS I had to have to connect to my iPad. It didn't try to
usurp its betters before.
