Okay,

MacOS X 10.6.2, Preview.app (v5.0.1 (503)).

I've got this:

<http://www.markthomasinfo.com/zzz_images/CIFcard.pdf>

and I'm trying to print it. It comes out as 4 3/8" x 3 3/8" (approx)
`card' sized thing if I print it using TeXShop.app.

But if I try with Preview.app, I always get something filling the page.

Now, I can see `Scale to fit' (which is, annoyingly, seeminly always the
default option) telling me it's goint to `Print entire image' and the
greyed-out `scale' box contains " 208% " which is (probably) the linear
scaling factor required to make the image fill the A4 page from its
normal size.

If I print like that, I get A4 filled.

`Fill entire paper' gives me 230% scaling factor and even more paper
filled.

So the obvious thing to try is `Scale: 100%'.

Yeah?

Well, that fills the A4 page too. It ignores the scaling factor I've
typed in an uses the one that was there before the user entered his
data.

Can anyone offer any suggestion on how to threaten Preview.app
effectively so as to make it behave?

Rowland.

I think it is waiting for you to finish typing 100
Hit tab to exit the scale field before you hit print or return.
It looks like UI design bug to me.

Check it shrinks in the preview before continuing?

I think it's a bug as well as I had similar odd problems trying to print
photos.

Try creating a custom paper size with the dimensions that you want (but
still put A4 in the paper tray).

Alternatively, given the nature of the thing that you are printing, why
not print it on A0 then you can entertaining unfold it in front of the
officer when stopped. :-)

I did.

Oh well, that's totally bloody obvious, that is. Let's see - yup, it
works. And oh look, I can have four up printing an' all, handy with
this one.

Shoot the UI designer, that's all I'm going to say.

It did - previously, I just typed in the number, hit `return' at the end
of doing so as you would, and it printed wrongly.
