I have just set up a sub account to my btinternet subscription, to add
an additional email address.
Have done this before with no problems.

Setting up Mail on my mac (under a separate user account) using my
username, password and the incoming and outgoing mail servers for
BTinternet (mail.btinternet.com), I find I am unable to send mail out,
from that account.

Receiving mail is no problem.

After minutes of the stripey bar running (in Mail), I get a message
along the lines of "couldn't identify/verify the server, might be
another server, pretending to be the actual server, connect anyway?"

I've had little Snitch running on my mac previously, but have disabled
this... could this have anything to do with the problems I'm
experiencing?

Anything I can do to identify what's actually going on, as it just
seems to continue without any kind of time-out.

Let the diagnostics begin :)

cheers,
dean.

BT requires the SMTP server details to have the username & password, and
from the error message it sounds as if it is either missing, or it's
wrong. I'd double check the smtp settings.

Question: do you have SMTP authentication set up properly?

Almost certainly not.

Try ringing BT Internet.

I use 'em.

And every now and then, email breaks.[1]

In such cases, after much arguing, BT support gives me a new server
address to use, which works.

If you get no joy, ask me again and I'll dig up the list of alternative
BT email servers I've got, lurking somewhere.

Unless it's just that you need to set up SMTP authentication.

Rowland.

[1] I see other symptoms, but then I use a different email client.

Thanks guys.

I checked, double checked and triple checked the authentication.
Everything as it should be.
Just a case of BT being broke because it started working again all on
its own.

I'd be interested in that list of alternative mail servers though, as
this is sure to happen again!

Ta very much,
deano.
