That is an 850/1800/1900MHz phone, it will work in Europe, but won't be
ideal as it doesn't have 900MHz, should suffice for a few weeks trip though.

Ask for a "mobicarte" in any Orange (France Telecom) shop.

Except that for me at least all I get is a blue page - even the
main URL doesn't work!

For those of a UK persuasion that are not aware, The Phonehouse
is CPW by any other name.

Why don't you give her the mobile you purchased in the UK?

Prepaid sims can be bought easily, so that should not be a problem.
However, as mentioned already, that phone is lacking the 900 band. It
will work in major cities, but could have some problems in the more
remote areas. It's just like using a phone without one of the 2 AT&T
bands (850/1900) with AT&T. Just ask her to buy a phone with the
900/1800 bands if her phone starts to show signs of not getting signal.
Mobile phones are so cheap these days, that even a new quadband phone
(850/900/1800/1900) can be had for about $30.
