I suspect a recent update 6/11 KB982381 to IE 8 causing an issue.
I'll skip the long reason. I have installed other items after this
update. So when I go to remove the KB item via Control Panel, I get a
message that a list of programs might not work after I do, about 10-12
items.

Is this Microsoft's disclaimer or a real concern. I thought it was an
easy thing to remove an update? I mean, it is easy, but I thought it
was kinda idiot proof.

TIA

It is easy and kinda idiot proof.

No real concern.

So just do it. :-)

If you're that concerned (don't blame you; stuff can and does happen),
just make sure you create an up-to-date image of your hard drive and
validate it (something you arguably should already be doing anyway).

Since this is a security update, you should reinstall it once you
resolve whatever your issue is.

Or you could uninstall all the updates, going backwards until you get to
KB982381 if you want to feel less jittery. :-) Just remember, security
updates will need to be reinstalled!

I'm going brain dead. Of course, I have Acronis, so an image would at
least restore me to the current state. Thanks. I'll feel better
that way.

YW. All is well. :-)
