From: Skybuck Flying on 19 May 2010 09:33 Hello, The question is: "Do human beings have a unique energy signature ?" Suppose the phaser is invented which would allow people to "zap" each other. Like a television... if you don't like what you see, you just zap it ! ;) :) Not long after the invention of the phaser I would expect the invention of the shield to protect against the phaser. Now assume for a moment that somebody does not have a shield and gets "zapped". The matter of the person is transformed into energy... The question is "Is the energy back-traceable to a human being". In another words: "Does every human being have a unique energy signature ?". Other questions: "How long will the energy remain presents ?" In other words...: Once a human being has been zapped... is it possible to determine this ? Is it possible to detect it ? Is it possible to trace it back to a certain human being ? Otherwise it would be hard to know what or who was zapped away without other evidence... Maybe the Large Hydrogen Collider can unravel further mysteries/details about energy... maybe it can discover that a certain ammount of protons lead to a certain ammount of recidue... or maybe the protons themselfes are already enough to identify people ? Or maybe carbon's or whatever those tiny things are called ? ;) :) So question is: Once a human being is "zapped" and energy remains... how could it be identified as: 1. Being a human being ? 2. Who's energy signature was it ? ;) Bye, Skybuck.

With the entire planet a glowing plasma, due to the release of said energy, not sure that forensics makes much sense. > Maybe the Large Hydrogen Collider can unravel > further mysteries/details about energy... maybe it > can discover that a certain ammount of protons > lead to a certain ammount of recidue... or maybe > the protons themselfes are already enough to > identify people ? No. Everybody's protons are exactly the same. > Or maybe carbon's or whatever those tiny > things are called ? ;) :) > > So question is: > > Once a human being is "zapped" and energy > remains... how could it be identified as: > > 1. Being a human being ? > > 2. Who's energy signature was it ? ;) It couldn't be. Star Trek was just a vehicle for some mild fiction, and the marvels they "invented" were necessary to a 30 minute plot. From: Skybuck Flying on 19 May 2010 10:37 Well it seems there are already attempts to predict what would happen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter_weapon Mostly heating, explosions, plasma that kind of stuff... This leaves the question open (?): "Is there a weapon conceivable which could be used to eradicate a human being without leaving a trace? ;) :) Bye, Skybuck.

It wouldn't do quite that much damage if you converted one human to pure energy. E=mc^2 gives about 21kT TNT per gram of matter annihilated or 21MT per kg. So a 95kg human would be in the ball park of 2GT TNT Biggest ever Russian H-bomb design was 100MT (50MT as detonated). Krakatoa 1884 is estimated at 200MT (an order of magnitude less) Tambora in 1815 (year without summer 1816) was ~1GT You really would not want to be stood at ground zero. Crater size would be roughly 6-8km scaling as M^0.3 or so for a ground burst. see: http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=AD601139&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf (amazingly the graph in fig 12 goes all the way up to 1000MT!) Vulcanism would almost certainly add to your woes. Regards, Martin Brown
