From: Bill on 24 Mar 2010 12:54 I just had the same problem: KB971023 kept trying to reinstall. Moving the following to the recycle bin solved it: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\ReportViewer\ Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common.dll Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll Microsoft.ReportViewer.WinForms.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\BootStrapper\Packages\ReportViewer\ ReportViewer.exe After the install, I just restored these files. gchq wrote: Having a very simiiar issue with a W2K 14-Feb-10 Having a very simiiar issue with a W2K box ==================================== Event Type: Information Event Source: Windows Update Agent Event Category: Installation Event ID: 19 Date: 14/02/2010 Time: 03:34:26 User: N/A Computer: WINSTATION_11 Description: Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (KB971023) =================================================== Event Type: Information Event Source: Windows Update Agent Event Category: Installation Event ID: 17 Date: 14/02/2010 Time: 11:28:01 User: N/A Computer: WINSTATION_11 Description: Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. I suggest you try deleting those two files (just the ones in Microsoft Visual Studio 8, not the ones associated with the other two products) and then rerun the update and see what happens. Naturally, you should make sure you put a copy of the files in a safe place before deleting them! Speculating here ... it may be that the copy of Report Viewer associated with Visual Studio 2008 has "taken over" and the copy from VS2005 is no longer being used. In this case running the update will not replace the deleted files, but if they are not there the update may stop detecting as needed. If the update does replace the deleted files, it should be with the up-to-date versions, in which case the update should still stop detecting as needed. Harry.
